The other language

I have learnt a fair share of Indonesian words which differs from the Malaysian's Malay language. Here are some helpful hints to use in Indonesia:

1. kamar kecil - It's toilet. Kamar means bilik or room.

2. uang - It's wang or money.

3. sura - Jerung or shark

4. Baya - Buaya or crocodile. The name Surabaya exists because the shark won the fight against the crocodile in this city. It's believable as Indonesia seems to have some mystical sights like, the 'dessert' before the volcanic mountain or the tri-coloured lake.

5. Mie - mee or mi or noodle. They've got Mie Sedap (that latest instant noodle brand that is fast overtaking Maggi's instant noodle) in Rasa Kaldu Ayam. What the heck is kaldu?

6. Lesehan - eating on the pavement. It's quite interesting! There are no chairs or tables but you sit on a mat beside the road to enjoy your meal or drink.

7. apokat - no it's not apricot. It's avocado.

8. komplit - complete. In other words if you order Nasi Gudeg Komplit, it is a complete meal with fried egg. Don't ask me what gudeg is as I'm still trying to find out. Nevertheless, the meal tasted fabulicious!

9. sapi - cow. Telur mata sapi is fried egg cow's eye style. In Bali, cow is a sacred animal thus they serve BigMac with bull's meat instead.

10. ketimun - timun or cucumber

11. tomat - tomato, maybe they mispelt the word

12. bakso - meatballs

13. jahe - ginger. I shall rename my dog Jahe.

14. kraton - istana or palace

15. oleh-oleh - tit-bits

16. nasi kucing - Can you believe this, it is our nasi lemak!

17. Jepang - Japan
18. Apotek - pharmacy. This word came from the Dutch word 'apothecary'.

19. Selanda Baru - Can you guess what this is?
