I am about to send myself to kindergarten to brush up on singing nursery rhymes. The little boy needs to be constantly talked to or sang nursery rhymes to. Talking won't last long since I run out of topics quite easily when the other party don't reply. I've also been thought not to baby talk since babies learn by mimicking and I don't want him growing up saying 'goo-goo-ga-ga' to his friends.
Now singing nursery rhymes seem to last longer as I'll just have to learn up about twenty of them to last me that half hour. Sure, there are those I learnt during my pre-school years but they've all been wrapped up by the cobwebs in my brains over the years. My versions will be something like "Hey diddle diddle, the cow and the fiddle......or is it the cat and the fiddle?" or "One, two, buckle my shoes, three, four, shut the door....or open the door? What about seven and eight?"
And oh, these are old! The kids have new nursery rhymes these days that I've never heard of. Elmo's Song is my favourite since I'd only have to memorise the tune and these phrases - "This is my song, la-la-la-la, Elmo's song, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, Elmo's song, la-la-la-la-la-la-la......." Sounds pretty much like something which I could learn without attending the kindergarten.
Then there's "Take me to the ball game" which I could never have time to memorise the lyrics or "I'm a little teapot" which I often get the lyrics wrong. The little one's favourite is "The Muffin Man" which I replace the lyrics with whatever since I could not remember 'where the muffin man lives'.
Yes, I could skip the kindergarten and buy the CDs but I can't imagine paying for a CD to listen to "Mary Had a Little Lamb" instead of Josh Groban. In fact my latest Josh Groban was from a shop in Indonesia that sells pirated CDs and cost me something like RM2 maybe. The night markets here don't even sell pirated nursery rhymes!
Maybe I should just hang around pre-school kids and get them to sing so I can learn. Right now, mine are not too good plus the little kid stares at me as if I were silly or something when I get stuck at some lyrics or when I replace the lyrics with my own and it sounds funny.

Shame on you for buying pirated CDs...
Anonymous,
You must be a "katak bawah tempurung" (frog beneath the coconut shell) becoz in Indonesia, you walk in to any CD shops without knowing they sell original or pirated CDs until they tell you the price. What do you do then? Walk away or make their day?
By the way, if you are such a noble person, you would have the GUTs to leave your name behind and not sign off anonymously.
have you tried youtube for the nursery rhymes? i reckon the old nursery rhymes are pretty cruel, cat in the well, spider chasing miss muffet away, mother hubbard and her bare cupboard, humpty dumpty, blackbird pecking of the maid's nose...
i remember being very upset when my mum tried to sing rock-a-bye baby to put me to sleep coz the bough breaks and the baby falls. she never knew why i always cried until i was very much older and explained it to her.
so, you might want to go for modern nursery rhymes which should be less tragic. :)
